This alchemical drawing belongs to the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. The inscription on the top banderole reads, “F de la Rose-Croix,” or, “Fraternity of the Rose-Cross.” The lower banderole is inscribed, “C’est la croix que les Freres / sont obliges de porter sur la / poitrine elle doit etre d’or,” or, “It is the cross that the Brothers are obliged to wear on the chest. It must be of gold.” In manuscripts like this one, alchemy is formulated as an occult science in which the transformation of base metals into gold serves as a metaphor for the purification of the soul.
