Andreas Cellarius’s Harmonia Macrocosmica is commonly described as the most beautiful celestial atlas ever produced. It contains 29 hand-colored, double-folio plates depicting the cosmologies of Brahe, Copernicus and Ptolemy, the constellations of the northern and southern hemispheres, and the movements of the sun, moon and planets. Published in 1660, it was a continuation of the late Gerard Mercator’s vision of a universal atlas that would cover everything of the then-known cosmos, geography and history of the earth.
