A Day of Celebration (Namnsdag) is the magnum opus of Swedish genre painter Fanny Brate. It depicts the artist’s daughters, Astrid and Torun, preparing a name day party in a large room, adorned with 18th century Gustavian furniture, lavish wall hangings, meadow flowers and ivy. Originating with the Christian calendar of saints, name days are a tradition in some Roman Catholic and Eastern Orthodox countries where one celebrates a day of the year corresponding to one’s given name.
