Produced by Hamburg artist Hans Simon Holtzbecker between 1649 and 1659, the Gottorfer Codex is a four-volume florilegium documenting the Baroque garden of Duke Frederick III at Gottorf Castle in Schleswig. The Codex consists of 365 illustrated pages depicting 1,180 plants painted in gouache on veal parchment. The National Gallery of Denmark recently dedicated more than four years to its restoration.
