Jakob Bogdani was born in Hungary. After studying in the Netherlands, he became a specialist still life and bird painter at the court of Queen Anne. He was patronized by Admiral George Churchill and had access to his famous aviary at Windsor Park. His bird paintings typically feature an array of species from different habitats crowded in a landscape, often highlighted by a single bird of red plumage. He became a leading exponent of this genre in England, much in demand among aristocratic patrons.
