Classical sirens bathe in the ocean waters as a distant ship passes along the horizon. An English artist, Swan studied in France under the academic master Jean-Léon Gérôme, whose influence is apparent in the sensuous realism of the painting’s central figure. Yet, the high-key color, delicate atmospheric effects and the overall dreamlike quality of the piece are more in keeping Symbolism and Impressionism than the highly conventionalized art that Gérôme espoused.
