Thomas Gainsborough was one of the most important British artists of the second half of the 18th century. This portrait of a grinning Pomeranian is one of the handful of dog paintings that he completed during his lifetime. The texture of the animal’s fur is articulated in the scintillating brushwork that is a hallmark of the artist’s later works.
